Who will you be?

I went to school with Pete many years ago. We argued over everything imaginable in class and filled our down time with “half-penny” bets (and Pete literally went home and cut penny’s in half for that sole purpose). And though I have only recently met Masha, I have grown to respect her for her honest approach to life. But you can’t help but be honest with her with her beautiful, piercing blue eyes looking straight through you.

I was honored to be asked to photograph their special day.

As an intern for Austin Film Society, I was asked to contribute by photographing the event (along side Bronson Dorsey, a really nice guy and great photographer). I snapped tons of fun party pictures, thanks to everyone for letting me photograph them.

It was a great party (even as the photographer) and a great opportunity to practice my event/party photography. I can’t wait to do more.

Of course this was more then just experience to put on my resume. I love photographing people I know, because it gives me a different perspective on them, almost as if seeing them for the first time again.

The first time I saw Heather, I liked her. I imagine this is how most people feel about this down-to-earth, caring gal who makes even the most shy persons (such as myself) feel like they are at home. I am so happy that she and Seth met, because it’s always a blessing having family you honestly like.

I can’t remember the first time I saw my cousin Seth. My family would fly across country every Thanksgiving for our large family get together at the Harvard club. Being a cautious child, I would try and hide away as much as I could, whether behind my mother’s leg or in the company of my older cousins. Seth was one of these young “welcomers” who introduced me to the secret passages in the Harvard club and the magic that could be had, unbeknown to the large group of adults gathered over turkey and talk. Seth taught me that family could be fun.

The wedding was a beautiful event, much like the couple themselves. With a baby on the way, I hope I’ll be invited back for some newborn photos on that special day.

As a child, my grandparents’ home was a magical place. There was a “secret garden” in the back, compete with tall hedges and a wander turtle. I was given a skeleton key, which I pretended opened the garden all for myself. And through that door hours of imagined quests and lost loves were found.

This key, along with other treasures have found their way into my possession. One of my favorite finds was a group of old cameras; everything from the early Polaroids, Instamatics, and brownie reflexes. The oldest, a brownie reflex synchro, was my grandma’s camera in college (think 1940s). It takes 127 film, 4×4 negatives, and a lot of love. I managed to find color and black&white rolls on B&H, and developed/printed at Precision Camera. It was a bit pricey, but it was a salute to the past I could not pass up.

The prints turned clearer than I had expected. In fact, if I saw these out of context, I don’t think I would know what they were taken on. I can’t wait to take my next roll!
