Austin Gorilla Run 2012

Last weekend was one of my favorite events of the year, THE AUSTIN GORILLA RUN! This is a run I photographed last year as well. It is a 5k race, designed to raise money and awareness for the Mountain Gorilla. With each registration, each person gets their very own gorilla suit, creating a colorful mosaic of imaginative Austinites roaming around Downtown’s streets. This year the weather was grey, and it just felt like a black and white kind of day. I love the effect. While not as cheery and upbeat as last year’s vibrant colors, the b&w gives the photos a creepy and solemn mood (for me at least). I tried to get past the fun of the event and make us think about why these people joined together to raise money.

Carmel, California Wedding

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Tim and Helen’s wedding in Carmel, California. It was amazing to see so many happy people gathered together in celebration. This couple is one of the sweetest I have ever met, and I hope you can see their love beaming from their faces in the pictures below.

Bourgeois Men

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the morning with the Bourgeois men. Grandpa, Dad, and two little guys met me at Zilker park for some photo fun.

We didn’t sit still for a single moment as Dax and Miles raced back and forth over the rocks that sit in the middle of the park. Miles was kind enough to inform me that having kids was a lot of work.

Though we were moving nonstop, I caught some of the excited moments that this family was kind enough to share with me.

Consumed

This weekend I got the chance to work as Production Designer and Still Photographer on the set of the short CONSUMED. I have never worked in art direction before, but I loved it! Getting to focus all my energy on color, props, and composition made me realize how much I usually have to rush by those pieces of production to meet a deadline or compromise a schedule.

It was also wonderful to work with some of my old classmates. In film school we would work in a closed room with little possibility of our imaginings coming to life. But we finally made those shared ideas into a reality. I am excited to see the finish product of the production and hope it does well in next year’s film festivals.

The production design for this film consisted of 6 sets, one for each passing month. We chose to differentiate each month with a different color. And as the character’s relationship deteriorated, so to did the “comfort” of the family restaurant kitchen.

Two and A Half Weeks

My friend Jing and her husband Josh are having a baby. A baby girl, according to the swelling of her nose. Apparently some old wives tales are true. In two and a half weeks (or sooner) a beautiful baby girl is going to be blessed with two wonderful parents. It is such a pleasure to photograph two people so much in love and excited about the next stage in their lives.

Boys Will Be Boys

I went out to of town last weekend for a last minute family shoot, just east of Austin. I love that feeling of being out in the Texas countryside, because it feels like a place forgotten by the modern rush. The people there yell, but aren’t angry. The sun lasts longer without tall skyscrapers. And directions are given not by street names or addresses, but by the color of the gravel roads or the tiles on the family home.

I guess I have fallen in love with Texas after all.

Austin Gorilla Run

This Saturday I had the pleasure of being part of the first Austin Gorilla Run. I had no idea what to expect with this Mountain Gorilla charity race, and what I got was nothing I could have imagined. Over 700 people dressed in unique Gorilla suits cannot be explained, which is why I thank god that I only had to take pictures! I had such a great time and I hope they continue the event next year, and in cities around the country.

Camera Phone Fantasy

I recently bought my first smart phone (I know, I seem to be a little behind the times), and I wanted to test the power of my new HTC Evo’s camera phone on a hiking trip Josh and I planned for New Years. I did the unthinkable; I left my camera at home.

I downloaded several camera apps, but decided to use the main camera phone without any effects to take a control set. The results really surprised me! The pictures turned out beautifully. The Texas sky was captured in its deepest blues and Enchanted Rock looked like the mountain it is; tall and alien.

While the camera on my phone took beautiful pictures, I still take into consideration a couple things. Firstly, the weather and light were perfect. There weren’t any difficult lighting situations, so any point-and-shoot would have done well. Secondly, while the pictures were beautiful, the quality of the photos was noisier than I would have liked. I don’t know what they would be like to print.

It was a fun experiment, but I think I will make room in my pack for my “real” camera. But take a look at the rest of the pictures, and see if you can see a difference; I’d love to know!

Texas Hikes (dot) Com

I am not dead. The lack of posts had merely been due to new circumstances in my life. I recently got a new job in video production, which is a great way for me to support myself doing what I love. I have been dedicating myself to this new outlet of creation and have had little time for my own projects. However, Josh and I have been working on a project for the past couple months that has been really successful.

Being lovers of the outdoors, we search the internet for great hiking sites in our area. However, all the hiking websites for Central Texas and the surrounding areas were not very interesting. None of them highlighted the beauty that I have grown to love in the Texas countryside. So combined with my photography skills and Josh’s web expertise we’ve launch TexasHikes.com to the world!

While it is still a work in progress, every week we build more and more content. Needing reviews of Texas State Parks, trails, and camping facilities, we are getting out of our backyard and into the Texas wilderness.
