Bryson Turner – Austin’s Funniest Person 2009

Bryson is a funny guy, which is convenient as he is a comedian by trade.

Whether going on a humorous tangent of why he prefers to wear his glasses (“My life is a ‘Guess Who?’ game, the glasses are just an extra way to help the audience remember me,” and summing up in, “But no, I wouldn’t wear them to war.”), or giving me an idea of what types of jokes he writes (a major theme, being a “part-time adult,” which help drive our photo shoot), Bryson definitely feels most comfortable when attached to a mic.

We set up several versions of him “failing as an adult” in his wonderfully rich kitchen (and by rich, I mean rich in character), as well as using his roommates dogs as uninterested audience members. We then moved to a great jungle mural off Burnet Rd near 183 to use the recently rare sunshine. With such rich colors and vibrant characters, creating an atmosphere of the absurd was painless. The only difficulty I ran into was figuring out how to negotiate the 2-D space of the flat mural and the very three dimensional man who I was to incorporate within it. However, in 700 photos we shot, there are many great stills to use.

I look forward to the finale of this project, which will capture Bryson in his element, on stage, at Coldtowne Theater next Friday night.
